Description
A group of peasant women sitting under the canopy of a tree. Standing out in the centre of the group are two women with an upright stick, both holding it with their hands. At their feet is a jug with two handles. On either side, the rest of the women are divided into two equal groups. Dressed in a kind of long cloak and protected by a wide-brimmed hat, they show braids in the style of traditional Alentejo women. The trunk of the tree coincides with the left side of the picture and its crown extends, like a trail of smoke, to more than halfway up the tree. The work was created with a dry point, with no tonalisation of the forms. The figurative elements are only outlined in black, in the form of a sketch. It is known that Guilherme Casquilho was considered a ‘painter of labour’, dedicating a large part of his work to the men and women of the Alentejo countryside. This engraving also has underlying ideas of union and proletarian strength.
