Description
Engraving depicting a window with an open shutter and two women. A window with a roller shutter that opens halfway through where two women look out.
The blinds occupy half of the window and are half-run forming a horizontal pattern of light and dark brown strips. At each end (left and right) of the blind, a dark brown strip cuts perpendicularly across the listed pattern.
Connected to the bottom of the shutter is a light brown strip in the inverted shape of a guillotine blade, the right side of which widens in relation to the left.
The lower half of the engraving is occupied by two female busts, one centred and the other to its left. A dark brown border reinforces the lower base of the work. The woman in the centre of the piece takes centre stage. She has a square of transparent brown paper in front of her, which turns her complexion pink when compared to her pale-skinned companion on the left. The top right corner of the pink paper is folded.
The women are twinned in their posture, dress and the frontality of their countenances. Their full hair is dark and short, ending at the level of their necks. A light line runs vertically down the middle of the head to the forehead, leaving it clean of hair. The elongated faces are very similar: fixed, frontal gazes, clenched lips, small uncovered foreheads, ears covered by hair, eyebrows that follow the length of the eye.
Both faces are over-pigmented in areas of shadow, preventing us from appreciating the rigour of the line and giving the composition a "noisy" look.
They are dressed in a billowing jumper with narrow horizontal stripes,
revealing their necks. The shirt is in the "70s" style, with a long, wide-pointed collar.
Both women wear a quadrangular apron with a peplum, held in place by two strings around their necks. The left arm of the woman in the centre of the work is raised and bent downwards at a right angle. With her sleeves rolled up, you can see a little of her bare arm with the folded shirt over the jumper.
