Description
An ink representation of a daytime riot in a courtyard, under the passive gaze of a woman and a man. The clothing of the characters indicates that the scene is set in the 16th century and the raised masts of a boat with lowered sails indicate that a seaport must be nearby.
In the foreground, occupying the right-hand side of the picture, a man wearing a black hat with a wide brim that is twisted upwards, stands almost in profile, looking to the left. His black hair, flowing down his neck, allows half of his left ear to be seen. It ends in wavy strands. The face and neck are completely bare, strongly marked by scratches that shade the features. The nose is hooked, the mouth is small and fleshy and the eyes are open and empty, with no sclera, reminiscent of a blind man's gaze. A moustache and a pear cover his chin, which extends down his jaw. The man is wearing a collar in the shape of a mini ruffle and a doublet with vertically striped black sleeves only visible up to shoulder level.
In the background is a young woman, standing naked with a lighted lamp in her right hand, observing the disorder caused by the group of men. The fact that the female element is naked, illuminating the space with a lighted candle during the day, makes the scene a little unusual and may have some symbolism associated with it. She is drawn in profile, with a long veil covering her hair that extends beyond her back. Her hair is wavy and loose, falling down her long neck. Her countenance is serene, attentive to the event. She is wearing a necklace of round stones around her neck and a circular earring in her right ear.
The riot is taking place in the center of the picture and in the foreground. Four men involved in a fight are in a courtyard, flanked on the right by a building with a row of high arcades on the first floor and in the background by a wall with steps leading to the port.
The man furthest to the left of the group, dressed like a “lansquenet”, threatens with his sword and shield, ready, arm raised, to strike a blow. Next to him, on the right, another man, shorter and fatter, holds the cloak of a third man who seems to want to escape and who has the fourth man lying helplessly on the ground with his arms raised.
Another human figure can be seen between the arches.
In the background, in the center of the picture, there are some buildings and the masts of the ship. A man with a spear in his hand watches the fight from his lookout post, located in a small tower with a dome-shaped roof to the left of the ship. To the right of the ship are two buildings on different levels, a smaller one that continues the wall flanking the courtyard and which, due to its resemblance to the dome-shaped tower, could be a lookout post. Behind it, on a more distant level, is a larger building.
