Description
The theory and experimental approach to form and colour that defined Josef Albers' work, and which distinguished him as an influential forerunner of Op Art, certainly justify the tributes paid to him by Artur Rosa in 1972. Following on from the research into the Op trend that began in 1961, it is therefore a whole exploration of chromatic and formal values that we can recognise in this serigraph.
The processes of progression and repetition of the well-known ‘Homage to the Square’ series developed by Albers serve here as an operative model for Artur Rosa, who subjects one of his geometric studies to a three-part unfolding. In a gradual change of scale, and in a repetitive manner, these parts overlap, functioning as a succession that takes as its reference the presence of a composition by Josef Albers.
By investigating the properties of colour and using red - a colour that is presented here in the three chromatic variations determined by Albers' composition - different depths are illusorily defined in this work.
In a kaleidoscopic game of articulation between weight and lightness, between full and empty, or between configuration and reconfiguration, a dynamic abstraction is developed that establishes a tension between the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional, and recreates ‘the evolution of a square in a logarithmic mesh’ - thus signalling a continuity with the various studies that Artur Rosa developed in painting throughout the 1960s, but which he also tested in sculpture.
Subjected to a rigorous progression, the geometric figures thus take on different dimensions,
enunciating a fluid process of formal transmutation which, at the same time as introducing a rhythmic structure, provokes a suggestion of movement.
In fact, according to the Op codes, and based on a strong figure/background contrast, it is in the viewer's gaze that this movement is realised, thus calling for a direct relationship with the public.
