  • Bandoleta
Identifier:
MusA-805
Description
It is a chordophone played with a plectrum, assembled with four double orders (4x2= 8 strings) C, G, D, A, from low to high, tuned in intervals of fifths and has the function of a ‘contralto’ in the mandolin family, the equivalent of the Viola de Arco or Violeta (four strings) in the violin family. It has a similar morphology to the flat-bottomed mandolin and a string length of around 38-40 cm. Its forerunner, an Italian creation with a domed bottom, is called the ‘mandoliola’, also known as the ‘tenor mandola’ in English. It was a very popular instrument in Italy, influenced by the creation of ‘classical quartets’ (two mandolins, a bandola and a mandoloncello) and numerous professional and amateur mandolin orchestras, which flourished in the sixties and seventies of the 19th century.
