Description

This jewellery box consists of two elements, a vault and a lid, connected by two hinges. When you open the jewellery box, you find two inner compartments (one in the vault and the other in the lid), lined with green velvet. Due to the parabola-shaped front profile, the author called it "Parabola".

Geometrically this piece can be described as a quadric surface, with the parabolic cylinder sectioned by a horizontal plane and two oblique planes. The interior compartments follow the shape of the jewellery box, with smaller dimensions, due to the thickness of the wood. The piece is veneered with bird´s eye and edged with sycamore wood.

This object was studied mathematically by Susana Catarina Antunes de Carvalho under the scientific supervision of Andreia Hall (Professor and scientific curator of the Jewelry Box collection at the Universidade de Aveiro.
